I am Jack’s Top 5 Music Moments on TV Shows

1. Sons of Anarchy: “Alesund” by Sun Kill Moon

After a long and arduous search for his son, Jax finally finds Abel in the arms of a young, loving couple. He is now faced with the toughest decision of his life: whether or not to leave Abel with them. We see Jax as he follows Abel and the couple through a market. He walks, he looks, he tries to decide. It’s an incredibly heartbreaking sequence and the subtle haunting beauty of “Alesund” only makes it more so.

2. Ray Donovan: “Walk This Way” by Run DMC ft. Aerosmith

After Ray and Abby forget Conor’s birthday, they quickly scramble together a party and assemble all of the Donovan clan under one roof. Naturally, this ends in disaster and, at the end of the evening, his family is gone and it’s just Ray and Conor left alone in the house. Conor, filling up on booze and birthday cake, has a little party of his own dancing to “Walk This Way” and, soon after, his father joins him. This is a Ray we have never seen before, one where he really lets loose and dances with all his heart and soul and, for a brief moment, he is truly free. One of the most powerful scenes from the show so far.

3. Supernatural: “O Death” by Jen Titus

After 12 years on the air, Supernatural still has one of the best soundtracks on TV so choosing one standout music moment was next to impossible. Season 5 had been building up to the eventual meeting with Death and fans couldn’t have imagined a better introduction. Driving a pale Cadillac on a windy Chicago day, Death rolls up with Jen Titus’ “O Death” hauntingly playing throughout the sequence. The perfect song for the perfect introduction for the most feared of the horsemen. It is still the greatest character introduction Supernatural has ever produced and “O Death” is half the reason why.

4. Breaking Bad: “Crystal Blue Persuasion” by Tommy James and the Shondells

Some songs really do seem like they were tailor-made for certain shows and that is definitely the case with Breaking Bad and “Crystal Blue Persuasion”. Perfectly played during one of the show’s most memorable and defining montages, you could wonder how long they had wanted to use this song. Breaking Bad had many great music moments but if you ask any fan what their favourite song on the show was, 9 times out of 10 it would be this.

5. Friends: “I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts

Is there a theme song more iconic or recognisable than the Friends theme tune? Everybody knows the lyrics including people who have never seen the show and no matter how hard you try, you always clap when you hear ‘so no one told you life was gonna be this way.’ Don’t pretend you don’t!
